Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about Color Guard

I've heard Color Guard isn't a sport and isn't very challenging.  Is that true?
This could not be further from the truth.  Color Guard, although a lot of fun, is extremely
challenging.  The maneuver's and tosses are very difficult and take a great deal of practice
to master.  Learning the tosses and routine's helps build muscle and can be a great body
toner.

Do I have to have any experience to be a member of the Color Guard?
No, you don't have to have any experience.  The Coach will teach you all you need to
know and Color Guard Captains and veteran's will work with you to help you learn the
routine's.

I hear Color Guard is only for girls.  Is this true?
No, Color Guard is open to both boys and girls.  Boys may not consider Color Guard for
various reasons, however, it should be noted that Color Guard is mentally and physically
demanding.  Boys and girls excel differently at Color Guard, but it can have great benefits
for both..

Are practice's mandatory?
Once the season begins, ALL practices are mandatory, unless excused by the Coach.
There are no excused absences during band camp.  Members of the guard who miss band
camp will not be able to participate in Fall Color Guard.

Is Color Guard free?
No, unfortunately, there are some fee's associated with this sport.  Please see the Fee
Schedule page to see what fee's are involved.

What does the Color Guard Registration Fee Cover?
In the Fall, this required fee covers Fall marching band expenses for color guard
students.  Examples of costs covered by this fee include purchase of color guard
flags/equipment/props transportation to marching band activities, drill, clinicians, T-
shirts/hat/shorts, and awards.  The color guard fee is less than the marching band fee
because color guard students are not provided with a marching band uniform but instead
are required to purchase costumes separately from this fee.  The color guard program is
also subsidized by music booster and band booster fundraising, as well as color guard-
specific fundraising.  In the Winter, this fee covers various things such as competition
fees.

What if I can't afford the fee's?
No student will ever be turned away because they cannot afford the fee's associated with
this sport.  If your family has a problem with the fee's they should contact one of the
Guard parents, or the Coach as soon as possible.

What is the "No Fuss Fundraising Fee" and do I have to pay it?
This required fee augments the general band registration fee.  This fundraising fee
structure ensures that those who participate in student fundraisers do not bear a
disproportionate burden, while providing an option for those who do not wish to
participate in student fundraisers.  Participation in Tag Day remains mandatory.

This fee can be paid in one of two ways:
  1. Up front at the time of registration, or
  2. Deducted from fundraising profits during the year. [Option 2 is intended for those
who plan to participate in fundraising.]
If you select to pay the fee up front:
  • Participation in student fundraisers (e.g., cookie dough sales, fruit sales, scrip) is
    completely voluntary.
  • 100% of your student fundraising profits (if any) will immediately go to your trip
    account.
